How to print handwriting paper

  1. Choose a ruling style. Primary paper is the familiar school paper with a dashed middle line.
  2. Set the line size, or the box size for grid paper and the angle for slant guides.
  3. Pick the paper size and orientation, then print as many copies as you need.

Numbered and skip-line paper. Number the lines and set the number of rows to make spelling test paper with one numbered row per word. "Skip a space between rows" leaves an empty band under each row, so tall letters and tails don't run into the row below.

Sky, grass and ground paper colors the top space blue (the sky, where tall letters reach), the middle space green (the grass, where short letters sit) and the space below the baseline brown (the ground, where tails go). Many early writers find it easier to say "tall letters touch the sky" than to remember line names.

Fading middle line. With Fade the middle line down the page, the dashed line is full strength on the first row and gets lighter on each row after, until the last rows have none. It is a way to move from primary paper toward plain lined paper on a single sheet.

Highlighted paper shades the band between the dashed middle line and the baseline in yellow or blue. That band is where every short letter sits, so the color gives a writer who drifts off the line or mixes up letter sizes a clear target. Turn it on under Highlighted writing band.

How to use handwriting paper

Tall letters like b, d, h and l start at the top line. Short letters like a, c, m and o fill only the space from the dashed line down to the baseline. Every letter sits on the baseline, and tails on g, j, p, q and y drop below it, which four-line paper marks with its own line.

Left-handed writers usually tilt the page the other way and keep the hand below the line; see paper position for left-handed writers.

Say the line out loud while writing at first: "start at the top line, down to the baseline." Once letters sit on the lines without reminders, move down a line size, and later switch to wide ruled paper.

Example: Seyes and primary paper

An adult working on cursive prints Seyes paper on A4 with the margin line on. A parent prints 1 in primary paper in landscape, so a kindergartner has wide rows for short words.

The same family later moves to kindergarten worksheets on this paper with the child's name.

Questions people ask

What is primary handwriting paper?

Practice paper with rows of three lines: a solid top line, a dashed middle line and a solid baseline. It helps beginners size tall and short letters.

What is Seyes or French ruled paper?

A ruling used in French schools, with heavy lines 8 mm apart and three lighter lines 2 mm apart in between, plus vertical lines every 8 mm. It helps keep letter heights consistent.

Which paper is best for kindergarten?

Primary paper with a dashed middle line at 1 in or 3/4 in, often printed in landscape so each row is wide. If letters drift off the line, turn on the highlighted writing band.

What is highlighted handwriting paper?

Paper with the space between the dashed middle line and the baseline shaded in color. The shaded band shows where short letters go and where every letter should sit. Pick Yellow or Blue under Highlighted writing band.

Can I print handwriting paper without the name line?

Yes. Turn off Name and date line at the top.

Can I make numbered lined paper for a spelling test?

Yes. Turn on Number the lines and set Number of rows to the number of words, for example 10 or 20.

Is there college ruled or narrow ruled paper?

Yes. Pick College ruled (9/32 in) or Narrow ruled (1/4 in) as the ruling style.

What is sky, grass and ground paper?

Primary paper with the top space shaded blue, the middle space green and the space below the baseline brown, so a child can place tall letters, short letters and tails by color. Pick Sky, grass, ground under Highlighted writing band.

Is the paper free to print for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you need for home or classroom use.
