How to make a cursive alphabet worksheet

  1. Choose Alphabet chart for an A to Z reference on one page, Poster for a big chart across four pages, or Letter practice for tracing pages.
  2. Pick capitals, lowercase or both. For Letter practice, pick the letters you want, or use a letter family button.
  3. Pick traditional or modern cursive, set the line size, and print.

Working through the cursive alphabet

Keep the chart nearby. Print the chart once and keep it next to the practice pages, so the writer can glance at a letter they have not memorized yet.

A few letters at a time. Five letters a session is a good starting point. Go up or down from there. Each letter gets rows for the capital, the lowercase letter and a row of short words that use it, so the letter is practiced on its own and in a word.

Lowercase usually matters more. Most everyday writing is lowercase, so give those rows extra repeats if time is short. Set Letters to Lowercase only to leave the capitals for later.

Letter families. The family buttons group lowercase letters by how they start: upstroke letters begin with a rising stroke from the baseline, hump letters begin with a hump over the top, and round letters begin like a c. Learning one family at a time repeats the same opening move. These groups are a practical set for this site, not an official curriculum.

Where each letter starts. Set Starting dots to Dots and arrows and the chart shows a green dot where each lowercase letter begins and an arrow for the first stroke. The dots were placed on the Playwrite letter shapes, which may differ a little from the cursive your school teaches. Capitals don't get dots, because their strokes vary too much between styles.

A poster for the wall. Poster mode draws the chart about twice as large and splits it across four pages. Trim each page along the corner marks and tape them together.

Example: the chart and A to E pages

A homeschool parent prints the traditional cursive chart, then selects A through E in Letter practice with two tracing rows. The pages show capital A, lowercase a and the words ant, bag and cat, then move on to B.

Questions people ask

Can I print the whole cursive alphabet on one page?

Yes. Choose Alphabet chart. At the default 3/4 in line size, all 26 capital and lowercase pairs fit on one page.

Can I practice only certain cursive letters?

Yes. Choose Letter practice and tick the letters you want, or use the Vowels button.

Which cursive style does the alphabet use?

You can switch between traditional cursive (Playwrite US Trad) and modern cursive (Playwrite US Modern), two typefaces made for handwriting education.

Yes, for lowercase letters. Set Starting dots to Dots and arrows. A green dot marks where each letter begins and the arrow shows the first stroke. Capital letters show the finished shape only.
