How to make a name tracing worksheet
- Type the name exactly as it should be written. For a class set, put one name on each line.
- Pick print or one of the cursive styles, and choose how the letters are capitalized.
- Set the number of tracing rows and blank rows, then print. Each name starts on its own page.
Tips for name practice
Use the capitalization the child will use at school. Many classrooms teach a capital first letter followed by lowercase letters, so "Capitalized" is the default. Switch to UPPERCASE if that is how your child is writing their name right now.
Start big. The 1 in line size and dotted letters are set as the defaults because they are the easiest starting point for small hands. Move to 3/4 in once the letters are landing on the lines.
Add the letter row for tricky names. "Add a row of each letter" spaces the letters of the name apart, so a child can trace each one on its own before writing the whole name.
Letter boxes and first-letter rows. Letter boxes give every letter its own box: one row to trace, then an empty row to fill in. They help a child see how many letters the name has and keep the letters from crowding. For the youngest writers, "Start with rows of just the first letter" practices the capital on its own before the whole name.
Highlighter tracing. Set Trace style to Yellow and the name prints in solid pale yellow letters, like a name an adult has written with a highlighter for a child to trace over in pencil. Turn on the big outline name to give the top of the page a name to color in.
Example: name pages for a whole class
A kindergarten teacher pastes 22 names from the class list and keeps the defaults: Print, dotted letters, 1 in lines, three tracing rows and one blank row. The tool makes 22 pages, one per child, which print in one go.
Questions people ask
Can I make name tracing sheets for a whole class at once?
Yes. Put one name on each line in the box. Each name starts on its own page, up to 30 names per batch. At the 1 in size, keep to three tracing rows and one blank row so each name fits on one page.
Can I make the name tracing worksheet in cursive?
Yes. Choose Cursive (traditional) or Cursive (modern) under Handwriting style. Pick a bigger line size for cursive names, since the letters connect and need room.
Does the name get saved anywhere?
No. The page is drawn in your browser and the names you type are not stored or sent anywhere.
What if a name has an accent or an apostrophe?
Accented Latin letters such as é and ñ and apostrophes are supported. Characters the handwriting fonts cannot draw, such as emoji, are left out, and the tool tells you which ones.
How do I get the last name on the sheet too?
Type the first and last name on the same line, then turn on Include the last name on its own rows.
Can I make highlighter name tracing sheets?
Yes. Set Trace style to Yellow. The name prints in solid pale yellow letters for your child to trace over in pencil, the same idea as writing a name with a highlighter.
Can I put each letter of the name in a box?
Yes. Turn on Add letter boxes. The sheet adds a row with each letter in its own box to trace, then a row of empty boxes to write the name in.
