Kindergarten Handwriting Worksheets

By , Handwriting Practice Worksheets

Print kindergarten handwriting worksheets on big lines: a child's name, letters, numbers or first sight words, with dotted tracing then blank rows.

Practice set

First name only is fine. It stays on your device.

The child draws in the box, then finishes the sentence on the lines.

Look
Handwriting style

Height from the top line to the baseline.

Trace style

Fading rows get lighter row by row. Yellow works like tracing over a highlighter.

Tracing darkness

Printed too faint? Pick Dark.

Starting dots

A green dot shows where each letter or number starts, and the arrow shows which way the first stroke goes. Works on traced letters and numbers.

Letter spacing

More space between letters helps writers who crowd them together.

Row spacing
Rows
Paper
Orientation

Landscape gives longer rows.

Line weight
Highlighted writing band

Shades the space between the dashed line and the baseline on 3- and 4-line paper. Sky, grass, ground colors the top, middle and tail spaces.

For example: Trace each word, then write it on your own.

How to make a kindergarten worksheet

  1. Pick what to practice: a name, letters, numbers 1 to 10, days, months, a draw-and-write page or a set of ten sight words.
  2. For the name option, type the child's first name.
  3. Keep the big 1 in lines and dotted letters, choose how many tracing and blank rows, then print.

Kindergarten handwriting, one small piece at a time

Start with the name. A child's own name is the word they see most, and it gives a reason to care about the letters in it. The name option prints a solid example, dotted rows to trace and blank rows to try alone.

Keep sessions short. One page is plenty for a sitting. Pick a few letters or numbers rather than the whole set, and stop while it's still fun.

Stay on big lines. This page only offers the larger line sizes, 1 in, 3/4 in and 5/8 in, because small lines are hard for new writers. For a full range of sizes and styles, use the letter tracing and name tracing tools.

Sight words come later. The 40 Dolch pre-primer words are split into four sets of ten, for children who are already tracing letters with ease. Print one set a week. The other Dolch lists and the Fry words are on the tracing worksheets page.

Draw and write. This page puts a big drawing box at the top and a sentence starter such as "I like" on the first line. The child draws a picture, traces the starter and finishes the sentence. Spelling doesn't need to be right yet; the point is putting an idea into words.

Days and months. These presets give each day or month its own block, which ties handwriting to calendar time at circle time.

Example: a first name page

A parent types "Mia", keeps dotted letters at 1 in, and prints one page with a solid example, two tracing rows and one blank row. The next day they switch to Capital letters A to Z and print just the first page.

Questions people ask

What size lines are best for kindergarten?

Bigger is easier for new writers. This page starts at 1 in and also offers 3/4 in and 5/8 in. Move down a size once letters sit neatly on the lines.

Can I make a worksheet with my child's name?

Yes. Pick My child's name and type the name. It prints a solid example, dotted rows and blank rows.

Which sight words are included?

All 40 words of the Dolch pre-primer list, in four sets of ten so each worksheet stays short. The other Dolch lists and the first 100 Fry words are on the tracing worksheets page.

Is there a days of the week or months worksheet?

Yes. Pick Days of the week or Months of the year. Each one gets a solid example, tracing rows and a blank row.

What is the draw and write page?

One page with a drawing box at the top and a sentence starter such as I like or I see a on the first line. The child draws, traces the starter and finishes the sentence.

Can I print in slanted print?

Yes. Switch Handwriting style to Slanted print in the Look settings.

Is it free?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for home or classroom use. There is no sign-up.
