How to make a number tracing worksheet
- Choose a range such as 1 to 10 or 1 to 100, set your own From and to, or pick Only the numbers I type.
- Pick a layout: a block for each number, counting rows, missing numbers to fill in, or number words. Add a ten frame or dots to count if you like.
- Set the line size, trace style and number of rows, then print.
Getting more out of number tracing
Practice the tricky digits on their own. If a child keeps writing a few digits backwards, a short custom set of just those digits gives more practice where it is needed than a full 1 to 20 page. Pick Only the numbers I type and enter them.
Mix in counting. Counting rows print the range in order, a few numbers to a row, so a child practices number order at the same time as number shapes.
Use big lines first. 1 in or 3/4 in lines give small hands room. Move down a size once the digits sit neatly between the lines.
Pair digits with words later. Turn on the number word once the digit itself is steady, or switch the layout to Number words to make the word the main practice. Words are added up to one hundred.
Count, then trace. A ten frame is a box of two rows of five. The counting picture fills one square for each counted item, so a child can see the amount before tracing the number. Dots do the same in groups of five. Both are added for numbers up to 20.
Fill in the missing numbers. This layout prints the range in order with every other number, or every third, left as an empty box. It practices counting order and writing digits without a model.
Starting dots. Turn on Starting dots to show where each digit starts. If a child writes 2, 3 or 7 backwards, the dot and arrow show which side to begin on.
Example: a 1 to 10 page
A preschool teacher picks 1 to 10, keeps dotted digits at 3/4 in, and sets two tracing rows and one blank row. Each number gets its own block: a solid example, two dotted rows and a row to write on.
Questions people ask
Can I make number tracing worksheets for 1 to 20?
Yes. Pick 1 to 20 in the Numbers menu. Each number gets its own block of rows, and long ranges run onto several pages.
Can I practice just a few numbers?
Yes. Choose Only the numbers I type and enter the numbers you want, separated by spaces or commas.
Can I add number words?
Yes. Tick Add the number word to print the word next to each number, or pick the Number words layout to practice the words themselves. Words go up to one hundred.
Can I make number tracing worksheets for 1 to 100?
Yes. Pick 1 to 100, or From and to for any range of up to 100 numbers. Counting rows are the shortest layout for a long range, and setting tracing rows to 1 keeps it to a few pages. A full block for each number runs past the 20-page limit, so the tool trims it and tells you.
Can I add a ten frame?
Yes. Under Counting picture, pick Ten frame or Dots. Each number from 0 to 20 gets a picture to count before the tracing rows.
Can I make a missing numbers worksheet?
Yes. Pick the layout Fill in the missing numbers. Every other number, or every third, is left as an empty box to fill in.
Is there a limit on pages?
Each worksheet stops at 20 pages. For a long range, use a smaller line size or fewer rows, or split it into two worksheets.
