How to make a copywork sheet
- Paste the passage you want copied: a verse, a short paragraph from a book, or this week's spelling sentences.
- Choose whether rows split at each sentence or at your own line breaks.
- Set the number of fading rows and blank rows, then print.
How the fade works
Copywork means copying a passage by hand, line by line, to practice handwriting on real sentences. Each sentence starts with a solid model line. The next rows show the same sentence in lighter and lighter gray, so the writer leans on the guide less each time. The blank rows at the end are for copying it alone. With one fading row, the jump from tracing to copying is quick. With three, it is gradual.
Choosing passages. Short, well-written sentences work best: a line of poetry, a proverb, a sentence from a favorite book. Copying a good sentence by hand practices handwriting, spelling and punctuation at once. The passage menu has a few public-domain starters, each with its source filled in.
Copy only. Set Fading rows to 0 and each line prints once as a model, followed only by blank rows. That is classic copywork, with no tracing at all.
Memory rows. A memory row shows only the first letter of each word, with a line for each missing letter, like "R___ a l_____ e____ d__." It is a halfway step to writing a verse or poem from memory, followed by a blank row to try it with no help.
No sign-up and no monthly cap. The generator is free with no sign-up and no monthly cap on how many sheets you make. Each worksheet can run up to 10 pages.
Copywork is one part of a bigger routine. See using copywork to improve handwriting for the rest.
Example: a chapter book passage
A homeschool parent pastes two sentences from a chapter book, keeps Print at 1/2 in, two fading rows and one blank row, and adds the book title as the source. Each sentence prints as a model, two fading rows and one blank row.
Questions people ask
What is copywork?
Copywork means copying a well-written passage by hand. It practices handwriting together with spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.
How is this different from a tracing worksheet?
Tracing worksheets are built around single letters, words or names. Copywork is built around a passage: it splits your text by sentence or line, prints where it came from, fades each line from a starting shade you pick, and can add memory rows or skip tracing entirely for copy-only practice.
Can I use copywork for cursive practice?
Yes. Pick one of the cursive styles under Handwriting style.
Can I add where the passage came from?
Yes. Type it in Source and it prints under the worksheet title.
Is there a length limit?
Passages can be up to 1,200 characters, and a worksheet can run up to 10 pages. There is no limit on how many worksheets you make.
Can I do copywork without tracing?
Yes. Set Fading rows to 0. Each line prints once as a model, followed by blank rows to copy it on.
What is a memory row?
A row that shows only the first letter of each word, with a line for each missing letter. It helps with learning a verse or poem by heart. Turn on Add a memory row.
Are there passages I can start from?
Yes. The passage menu has two proverbs, the first verses of poems by Jane Taylor, Robert Louis Stevenson and Emily Dickinson, Psalm 23:1-3 from the King James Version, and the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. All are in the public domain.
